Numb

Feeling nothing at all. Emotional shutdown can follow you home from service. It often masks trauma or depression — and it responds to care.

What it can feel like

Feeling flat or detached, unable to connect with family, not caring about things that should matter, or feeling like you left part of yourself downrange. Numbness can feel safer than the alternative.

Why it happens

Shutting down emotion is adaptive in combat and high-stress operations. Back home, that same numbness can be a symptom of PTSD or depression rather than a personal choice.

What can help

VA and Vet Center clinicians treat the trauma and depression that often drive numbness, frequently with veteran providers. Peer connection and gradual re-engagement help feeling return. You do not have to stay behind the glass.

You might notice

  • Feeling emotionally flat or disconnected
  • Going through the motions without really being present
  • Feeling detached from people you care about
  • Wondering why nothing seems to affect you

Try this today

  1. 1Reconnect with one veteran who knew the earlier you.
  2. 2Ask the VA to screen for PTSD and depression.
  3. 3Do one thing that used to bring meaning, even without the feeling yet.
