Alone

Isolated, even in a crowd. Being surrounded by thousands of people and still feeling alone is one of the most common college experiences. It gets better.

What it can feel like

Everyone seems to have found their group already, your hometown friends feel far away, and your dorm can feel empty even when it is loud. Homesickness and loneliness can hit hard, especially first year.

Why it happens

You are building a new social world from zero, often far from home, while social media makes everyone else look settled. Loneliness in the first year or two is extremely common — not a personal failure.

What can help

Clubs, orgs, intramurals, and campus events are where real friendships start — it takes showing up more than once. Counseling centers help with loneliness and homesickness too. Your people are out there.

You might notice

  • Feeling like no one really understands you
  • Pulling away from people or activities
  • Believing you would be a burden if you reached out
  • Feeling isolated even when others are around

Try this today

  1. 1Go to one club or event this week and go back again.
  2. 2Prop your door open or invite a floormate to a meal.
  3. 3Call a hometown friend and book a visit or a regular check-in.
